ORNILUX^®: Glass architecture and bird protection – No contradiction

Bird protection glass can save the lives of millions of birds every year. Improved perceptibility of the glass surfaces helps birds recognize the glass as an obstruction in good time, thus preventing them from hitting it at great speed, a collision known as bird strike.

Effectiveness experimentally proven

By order of Arnold Glas the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology (ornithological station in Radolfzell) developed a test method that allows birds’ perception of test glass to be experimentally proven. Comprehensive tests were performed in which wild birds were released in a flight channel in the direction of two glass panes that were protected by a net to prevent a collision. In this, the birds could pick either control glass or test glass.

Scientific evaluation of the test series showed that the birds perceived ORNILUX^® test glass in particular to be an obstruction and avoided it. The results were verified by repeating the test series. Additional validation of the test method and its results was performed in outdoor tests over several years.
